چکیده

Bitcoin, the first peer-to-peer electronic cash system, opened the door to permissionless, private, and trustless transactions. Attempts to repurpose Bitcoin’s underlying blockchain technology have run up against fundamental limitations to privacy, faithful execution, and transaction finality. We introduce Strong Federations: publicly verifiable, Byzantinerobust transaction networks that facilitate movement of any asset between disparate markets, without requiring third-party trust. Strong Federations enable commercial privacy, with support for transactions where asset types and amounts are opaque, while remaining publicly verifiable. As in Bitcoin, execution fidelity is cryptographically enforced; however, Strong Federations significantly lower capital requirements for market participants by reducing transaction latency and improving interoperability. To show how this innovative solution can be applied today, we describe Liquid: the first implementation of Strong Federations deployed in a Financial Market.

Disintermediation of Inter-Blockchain Transactions

Different versions of peer-to-peer electronic cash exist as data represented by separate blockchains. Payments between such systems cannot be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution. Bitcoin provided part of the solution but its utility is limited to intra-blockchain transactions. The benefits are lost if a trusted third party is required to execute...

TLS-N: Non-repudiation over TLS Enabling - Ubiquitous Content Signing for Disintermediation

An internet user wanting to share observed content is typically restricted to primitive techniques such as screenshots, web caches or share button-like solutions. These acclaimed proofs, however, are either trivial to falsify or require trust in centralized entities (e.g., search engine caches). This motivates the need for a seamless and standardized internet-wide non-repudiation mechanism, all...

Proposals for Master Degree Thesis Research Group on Blockchain and Social Networking Reference:

1. A blockchain-based support for social networking. The recent increase in reported incidents of privacy and security breaches in social networks are mainly due the centralized nature of these neworks, which enables third-parties to collect and control massive amounts of personal data. This thesis regards the definition of a framework for the support of social networks exploiting a distributed...

When the cookie meets the blockchain: Privacy risks of web payments via cryptocurrencies

We show how third-party web trackers can deanonymize users of cryptocurrencies. We present two distinct but complementary attacks. On most shopping websites, third party trackers receive information about user purchases for purposes of advertising and analytics. We show that, if the user pays using a cryptocurrency, trackers typically possess enough information about the purchase to uniquely id...
